Dyazide Side Effects, Overall Information, Before Taking & What to Avoid

Dyazide is a trade name for Triamterene; and is a potassium-sparing diuretic. It is a combination of triamterene and hydrochlorothiazide and is effective in lowering high blood pressure which in turn prevents heart attacks, strokes and kidney problems. It is also often prescribed to people at risk of having low potassium levels. It also helps treat edema caused by heart failure, liver or kidney disease. It works by producing more urine to get rid of extra salt, water, and other fluids. Alongside Triamterene, inactive the ingredients include benzyl alcohol and glycine.

Side effects:

Dyazide, like any medicinal drug, has some side effects which can be expected as your body adjusts to the new drugs in the system. A few of the common side effects which you are most likely to experience are listed below. Inform your doctor if they continue over a prolonged period and become severe:

  • Dizziness
  • Lightheadedness
  • Headache
  • Upset stomach
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Blurred vision
  • Dry mouth
  • Skin rash
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Confusion, most dominant in elder patients
  • Low energy
  • Stomach cramps
  • Low amount of sodium in the blood

Severe Side Effects:

If you go through any of the following or they become increasingly stringent, see your doctor immediately:

  • High amount of potassium in the blood
  • High blood sugar
  • Abnormal liver function tests
  • Hives
  • Large purple or brown skin blotches
  • Allergic reactions such as itching, swelling.
  • Dehydration
  • Fainting
  • Muscle cramps
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Blurred vision
  • Symptoms of kidney problems
  • Easy bruising or bleeding
  • Severe dizziness and trouble breathing

How to use:

Dyazide must be taken orally, with or without food. It is strongly instructed that you follow the dosage that your doctor prescribes considering your medical conditions, age, weight, kidney function, and therapeutic response. Usually, it is directed that you take it once in the morning.

It is advised that you avoid taking it before bedtime to prevent disrupting your sleep for frequent urination. Additionally, if you take drugs to lower your cholesterol level, you must take Dyazide four hours after or prior to these medications.

For Dyazide to work efficiently, you are advised to not abruptly discontinue the course even if you feel well, as most people with hypertension don’t feel ill.

Precautions

Before you start your prescribed dosage, inform your doctor about your medical history, specifically highlighting any condition or history of high blood pressure, kidney diseases, and liver malfunctions. You must discuss with your doctor if you have any of the following medical conditions:

  • Diabetes
  • Gout
  • High levels of potassium in the blood
  • Lupus

It is also cautioned that Dyazide may cause dizziness and drowsiness. If you take alcoholic drinks or recreational drugs such as marijuana; the dizziness can get severe when coupled with this drug. It is advised that you stop drinking or participating in any activity that requires you to be alert to prevent any mishaps.

It is also instructed that you inform your doctor if you are taking any medicines beforehand, prescribed or not in nature and herbal drugs. Your doctor will give you the precise prescription and dosage that suits your medical condition accordingly.

Excessive sweating and vomiting can elevate lightheadedness or cause severe dehydration; it is cautioned that you drink plenty of fluids. If you have diabetes, Dyazide can affect your blood sugar. Have regular tests, keep your weight in check and follow proper diet and exercise. This medication can also affect your potassium levels; consult your doctor before taking any medicines.

This medication may make you more sensitive to the sun. To avoid that, limit your time in the sun, use sunscreen, and wear protective clothing. In the case of sunburns, seek medical attention.

There are no specific risks in the case of pregnancy, but it is advised that Dyazide should be taken if extremely necessary after consulting your doctor.
