Norvasc is a calcium channel blocker which relaxes the blood vessels to ease the flow of blood. Norvasc is used for the treatment of high blood pressure alongside other medications or on its own. Low blood pressure prevents heart attacks, kidney issues, and strokes.

Norvasc is used in the prevention of angina as well. It decreases the rate of angina attacks. However, it is not to be used when the chest pains are occurring. It is not to be used as a chest pain relaxant

Minor Side Effects

  • Lightheadedness
  • Swelling of the ankles and the feet
  • Flushing

Severe Side Effects

Norvasc is used to prevent chest pain, but in some people with severe heart disease, it can rarely worsen the chest pain. If you experience any of the following, get medical attention immediately:

  • Worsening chest pain
  • Symptoms of a heart attack such as pain in the chest, left arm and jaw
  • Shortness of breath
  • Unusual sweating

It is rare that you get a severe allergic reaction such as difficulty in breathing or swelling of the tongue, throat or face due to this drug. However, if such is the case, you should call for medical assistance.

How to use?

Norvasc is taken orally, usually once a day. It can be taken both with or without food. The dosage and the time duration of the treatment may vary according to your medical condition.

Use this medication regularly as prescribed by your doctor. Make sure you take it at the same time, each day. You should continue taking the medicine even if you are not feeling unwell.

If your condition becomes worse, or you do not feel and see any improvement in your condition, consult your doctor.

Precautions

If you are allergic to any other dihydropyridine calcium channel blockers such as nisoldipine etc., or if you have any other kind of allergies, it is better to inform your healthcare provider before taking Norvasc. There can be some inactive ingredients in Norvasc which may also cause allergic reactions. To know more details, you should talk to your doctor.

Having knowledge about your prior medical illnesses is very important. If you have suffered from the following in the past or are under treatment for the following, your doctor should know beforehand:

  • A structural heart problem called aortic stenosis
  • Extremely low blood pressure
  • Liver disease

You might experience dizziness after taking Norvasc. If you are using it with alcohol or marijuana, it will make you even dizzier. Do not drive any heavy machinery after taking this medication.

If you are undergoing surgery, make sure your healthcare provider knows all the medications you are taking.

Without the permission of a doctor, Norvasc should not be given to children under the age of 12.

In people of older age, the side effects of Norvasc such as dizziness may be more enhanced due to their increased sensitivity.
